Start with a readable document: recognizable section headings, selectable text, and a layout that keeps each role with its description. Follow the employer's file-format instructions when submitting. A template name is not a guarantee that every applicant tracking system will interpret every document identically.
Start with a straightforward layout
A single-column layout makes it easy to inspect the reading order. Use headings such as Experience, Projects, and Skills so the document is easy to navigate. Keep company, role, and dates grouped together. Avoid using an image of a resume as the application file when text is expected.

Check the exported file
Opening the editor preview is useful, but the exported file is what you send. For each final version:
- Open the PDF and read it at a normal viewing size.
- Select a paragraph and copy it into a text editor. Check the content and order.
- Look for a heading stranded at the bottom of a page or a role split awkwardly.
- Test the contact links that you intend the reader to use.
- Check the application form's accepted file types and size limit.
Copying text is a useful inspection step, not a certification for every ATS. If the application shows parsed fields after upload, review those fields too.
Edit content before compressing the layout
If the document spills onto another page, first remove repeated or less relevant material. Tightening a sentence often improves the result more than reducing all the text. Keep enough space to distinguish sections and bullets.

Keep format and relevance separate
